Huayi Festival 2020 for Children

Chinese New Year is one of the best times to get our children involve in fun learning activities to develop their love for the Chinese language. As adults, we love to watch the performances put up by the local and overseas artistes at annual Huayi Festival.

For Huayi Festival 2020, there are some performances and activities specially for our little ones between ages 3 and 12. Here are some of our recommended programmes.

Gullinkambi 古林肯比

This puppet show put up by a Taiwanese theatre troupe is about a girl name Sonna who went on an adventure in search of her best friend, Gullinkambi, a polar bear from North Pole.

The most interesting thing about this performance is that there is no dialogue. Everything is portrayed through background music and the expressions of puppeteers. This leaves audiences with a huge space for creativity to experience the emotions of the characters and understand the meaning of love and courage.

We highly recommend this for all children up to age 12. Since there is no dialogue, even children who do not speak Chinese often can enjoy the performance. Parents can get your children to share their thoughts verbally or even create an art work with a short write up on what they have learnt or what they liked about the show.

The Runaway Chopsticks

This is a great opportunity for children to have a deeper understanding of our rich Chinese culture. Children will be able to understand why we still insist on the use of chopsticks even when fork is available.

Rooftop Reads

Do you find it a challenge to read Chinese storybooks to your children? Fret not, you can bring them to the Esplanade this Huayi Festival and our local author, illustrator and radio personality will share their stories.

We specially want to recommend the Saturday (1 Feb) session where our local illustrator 阿果 will be present. We are huge fans of his illustrations! You may find him familiar as his works have been converted to various merchandises and sold in Popular bookstores and even Jewel @ Changi airport.
