How to Use的、地、得 Accurately

These 3 words have almost the same pronunciation – de, confusing many of our pupils. This is even more apparent in spelling. When teachers read out the words/ sentences, some pupils have no idea which “de” to write.

Here are some simple tips on using these 3 words:

的 + 名词 (nouns)

的 is always followed by a noun or pronoun. For example:

  • 亲爱的妈妈
  • 便宜的水果
  • 红红的太阳

地 + 动词 (verbs)

地 is always followed by a verb. For example:

  • 慢慢地走
  • 争先恐后地上车
  • 拼命地往前游

动词 (verb) / 形容词 (adjective) + 得 + 怎么样(elaboration)

得 is a  bit more complicated to use because we have to read the entire phrase.  For example:

  • 打扫得真干净
  • 吓得直冒冷汗
  • 气得说不不出话来
